Is a home gym worth it?
For most people who train at least twice a week, yes. You save travel time, never wait for equipment and usually save money within one to two years. Read the full pros and cons of a home gym.
How much does a basic home gym cost?
A useful starter setup can cost around $300 (bands, jump rope, kettlebell, mats, pull-up bar). A versatile dumbbell-based gym is roughly $1,000, and a full rack-and-barbell setup about $2,500. See our budget guide or try the budget planner.
How many days per week should I train at home?
Beginners do very well with three full-body sessions per week on non-consecutive days, plus daily walking. Our 12-week plan follows this schedule.
What should I buy first?
Adjustable dumbbells and a set of resistance bands give you the most exercises for the money. Add a sturdy adjustable bench next. Our list of 10 essential home gym items explains each one.

Can I build muscle with only dumbbells or bands?
Yes. Muscle growth depends on progressive overload, enough weekly sets close to failure, protein and sleep. Compare tools in resistance bands vs free weights.
How long until I see results?
Strength and energy usually improve within 3–4 weeks. Visible body-composition changes typically take 8–12 weeks of consistent training and sensible nutrition.
Is HIIT better than steady cardio?
Neither is “better”. HIIT is time-efficient; easy steady cardio is gentle on recovery and builds your aerobic base. Most people benefit from both. See HIIT and cardio at home.
Do I need to stretch before working out?
Do a dynamic warm-up before training and keep longer static stretches for after training or separate sessions. Our mobility guide includes a 10-minute routine.

How much protein do I need?
Most people who strength train do well with about 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day (roughly 0.7–1 g per lb). See the tables in our nutrition guide.
How many calories should I eat?
Estimate your maintenance calories with the calorie calculator, then adjust slightly for your goal and track your weight for 2–3 weeks before changing anything.
Are supplements necessary?
No. Food comes first. Protein powder is a convenient option and creatine monohydrate is one of the best-studied supplements for strength, but neither is required to make progress.
